Report Card Day
Samuel's report card came home today. All of his academic subject grades went down, the lowest being a D in reading. To be honest, none of these grades really mean anything to me, because I know they aren't a good reflection of what he knows. I'm meeting with Samuel's teacher on Wednesday to discuss his curriculum. In the meantime, I'm spending lots of time making up little lessons and worksheets for him to do at home. I do small amounts of homework with him M-Thurs., and we have in-home helpers that do a bit of homework with him Tues, Wed., and Thurs. also. I learned from Samuel's first special education teacher the importance of teaching him how to work with me at home. We started when he was 4 years old, seating him on the floor and doing various activities. Now, 4 years later, I can work with him either at the kitchen table or up in my bedroom on the floor on a lapdesk. Sometimes it can take 45 minutes to do about 5 minutes of work. I follow his task with some kind of rewarding activity and give him small edible treats intermittently as he is doing his work.

Aren't report cards tough? I liked your philosophy of teaching your son to work with you. Yes, it's time-consuming, but it's worth it.

I'm finding the report cards hard to handle this year because I don't think Samuel's teachers are acting quickly enough to make adjustments to his work so that it is meaningful to him. His report card has the low letter grades in academic subjects (music, PE grades are okay) along with comments like "doesn't listen", "reads below grade level" , "needs improvement." I'd like to see a comment "does his best with teachers that are still trying to figure him out!" I don't know if I'll get to meet with his teacher today after all, schools are closed because of snow! Do you find yourself inspired to speak with your son's teachers after report card time?(Thanks for your comment, the first on my blog!!!)
