Church update: Success and Setback

My family attended church together this morning. The baby was able to stay home with my sister-in-law, so my husband had the luxury of making it through mass without any baby interruptions.

Samuel was able to sit in the "big church" about 5 minutes longer today than he did last week. The first time I tried taking him out he asked to stay longer! He is very restless as he sits in church, but it is so nice to see him notice his surroundings there. Our church experience the past few years has been him playing and stimming in the cry room.

He did so well all through mass, and then at Communion he went up to a lady sitting in the first row (who happens to belong to a religious order of sisters) and tapped her hat saying "Kachow!" a la Lightning McQueen from the movie Cars! She looked very surprised, I apologized and got Samuel back to the lobby as quickly as possible. I tried not to make too big a deal about it, but now I'll agonize about taking him up to Communion all this week. I'll probably take him up with me again next week and just keep a better hold on him. We tried hanging around a minute after mass so that Samuel could apologize to the sister. I should do that with him next week.

I think you were wonderful apologising for the ' Kachow',I don't know if I could have managed it(too busy laughing.....sorry).Your son sounds like a little star, I am dreading the day when my profoundly autistic daughters uses swear words she has heard in school. Now that would be something to worry about.I am sure that the sister spent the rest of her time in church trying not to giggle, I know I would have.
Our daughter has a quite funny way of acting up when we take her to church, she throws her arms around my neck and will not stop kissing me until I take her out.She tries to bribe me with kisses........what can you do? Just keep trying I guess. You son sounds like a lovely lad.

I hope that the sister was able to take everything lightly! They are from South America, so I'm not really sure how much they know about autism. I will never forget the look of surprise on her face!

I like your daughter's method of trying to get out of church! Affection is always a nice thing! Do you take her with you every time you go to church?

Samuel had a few spells of using swear words at school this fall, it was so embarrasing! We have to ignore it and get him thinking about something else, because if we scold him too much he'll just do it all the more!

Sunday is quickly approaching, time for me to strategize for the coming trip to church!

Um. Let me share with you my wife's response to a paniced mom dealing with the issue of an autistic child using swear words. She's a special educator - and more than a touch aspie herself, which makes her a perfecct "tanslator" for me.

"Did he use it in a sentance?" Was it in the right place? Was it used appropriately?" When it turned out that he HAD used it appropriately, my wife was thrilled, and communicated this to the mom. Celebrate! He used his words! He communicated! He made perfect sense!

Style, that we can work on later!

I like how your wife thinks Bob! If only they were so understanding at school!
