Praise Only for the Cured: The Autism Acceptance Project
Thank you to Estee Klar-Wolfond for this wonderful video statement about how autism is presented in the media. Be sure to visit her blog, The Joy of Autism.
I was trying to think about what they were saying here. It was very clear. I guess because I have a child w/asperger's, naturally I accept people w/all different kinds of needs.
I think all of the parents of special needs children I've ever talked to mention how the experience has made us more accepting and aware of other children and families affected by special needs.
It upsets me that the most popular portrayal of autism in the media is a la Jenny McCarthy's recent interview and the interview earlier this year that Larry King did with Bill Cosby and others. I wish and hope that those of us who are more accepting of autism and learn to live with it will be able to get more attention in the media. I'm glad that Estee has The Autism Acceptance Project. I guess my blog is my little contribution to the cause for right now.
You're right about that, Bishop's Wife. I'd love to hear from some of the autistic children who have been talked about in these interviews when they grow up!

That was great--thanks for posting it!
Also, if it had not been for my son having asperger's, I don't know if I would be so accepting.

The real heros, the autistics them selves never get invited to speak for themselves on shows. Instead we hear from millionares.
Well said.
