Rethinking Autism: Autistics Speak

This is great to see.. an organization/website that wants the attitude about autism that is presented in the media to show more respect and dignity towards those individuals who have autism.

It was 2 1/2 years ago that I wrote a post expressing my dissatisfaction about how autism was being portrayed in the media.

I went to the website and all the videos had some woman in a bra and panties in them! What the heck!

I know..I saw those too.. the maker of the website says they are tongue-in-cheek.. she does not like how celebrities get on advertisements about autism and quote things that are unsubstantiated... I get the idea that these videos are a backlash at that (maybe a backlash at Jenny what's-her-name?) Look at what she says on the home page.

Yes, the Asperger's crowd doesn't like to admit that the Autistic Disorder crowd exists.

Autism is NOT a difference it is a DISABILITY.

Maybe when the ASPERGER'S/HFA/NLD crowd spend some time in those self contained classrooms and group homes they'll change their minds. Unfortunately they will continue ignoring those people, claiming that's not true autism.

Asperger's is NOT autism. Asperger's is one of a group of diangosis' with the same overlapping features. Asperger's is Asperger's.

Personally, it's time children like my son aren't shifted under the carpet b/c those who have "normal" lives want them ignored.

I hate the Neurodiverse crowd... I'm embarrassed that I was once one of them. They only people they care about is their own "cutsie" club.

But they are giving me a lot of fodder for my "epic" though.

Thank you for your comment S. We have talked before about our differing opinions about neurodiversity. If I remember correctly (and I wish I still had your past messages.. I deleted them because I thought we were done talking to each other, but I'm glad to see we're not!) you encountered those in the neurodiversity "camp" who believed that our children shouldn't even be educated (sorry if I'm not getting it right). Well, I certainly don't agree with that. However, I like the aspect of neurodiversity that acknowledges that autism is a part of the spectrum of personalities/conditions/whatever-you-want-to-call-it that can exist in humanity. Rather than try to "eradicate" or "cure" it, we need to accept it and better attempt to understand it, so that we can educate our children and help them lead better lives.

I couldn't get the vid to load, but that's okay. I totally agree that I am sick of how the media presents (represents?) people anywhere on the spectrum. They certainly DON'T represent with any heart or accuracy! I appreciate that autism awareness is becoming more and more present, but I wish it was more accurate and helpful. I also wish there wasn't so much bickering between "crowds" and more working together to get awareness out. Like it or not, people with Autism and those with Aspergers all have disabilities to deal with, and wouldn't it be great if the attention were focused more on finding prevention and cure.
