It had been missing for months. This status caused great distress and moments of upheaval when he would remember. Who would think that one little Sponge Bob VHS tape was so important? Well, it was to Samuel.
It seemed that whenever I was impossibly busy he would demand that I look for it. I tried; on all the usual shelves and in all the usual boxes. Then it was on to the unusual places: under the beds, under the couch, on top of the fridge. I tried turning the search into teachable moments for him. " Why don't you take a few minutes and look for it?" That was not what he wanted at all.
Finally, yesterday I heard a jubilant, "I FOUND IT!!!!" I immediately knew he was talking about the video, but I asked him, "What did you find?" "My Spongebob Nautical Nonsense VHS tape!" "Where did you find it?" "Right here!" (I had to laugh, I was in another room and had no way of knowing what he was talking about, but he did answer my question!) He had found it on the bottom of our coat closet. Videos are kept on a shelf in there and it must have fallen off.
"Well Samuel, I'm very proud of you, you were able to find your missing video all by yourself!" Now maybe he can help me teach his three year old sister to look for her own things as well!

Good for Samuel!!!
It is great that he didn't give up. I know you are probably relieved to see it...for now anyways!
The power of spongebob!
Congrats on Samuel for honing in on his search mechanisms! Now, if only he could teach that to my grandkids or even to my kids (who are adults, yes, but still seem to search for things with the assumption that they will be found, hanging from the ceiling!
You're right Jeni, it's not just family members "on the spectrum" that need some searching skills! I won't name names, but there is a member of my family who asks where something is first before even bothering to first look for it himself!
Oh... it's that important to mine too! Had me looking for "So Smart Musical Instruments VHS" for a week. He found it in his room in a wicker basket. Totally understand the upheaval it causes!
Now if I could only get another "Red Baby Mozart"... still looking for that one to replace from the fire. Not having much luck...
Hi M.D. Wow, I cannot imagine how Samuel (or any of us) would cope with losing EVERYTHING, but especially the videos! Does your son ask lots of questions about his things?
There is nothing worse than losing that one special thing. That is so great that he found it all by himself!
