Wondering About Heaven
The pastor of my church gives wonderful homilies (the Catholic version of sermons), and this past Sunday one of the topics discussed was heaven! This has been a subject of great interest to Samuel lately. Now that he can sit through almost half of mass in the church I have been wondering how I could get him to pay more attention. The timing of this homily was perfect! He wants to know if our bodies go to heaven when we die. He has become upset when I tell him that they do not. Our pastor's homily clarified that eventually, our bodies and souls will be reunited in heaven. Samuel also asks about what a soul is. I better brush up on my knowledge of theology and be ready for more questions and answers!

Brilliant news on Samuel being able to sit so well through church. The last time that we attended( family christening), Beauty sang the theme tune to NEIGHBOURS and got mightily upset when she couldn't play the piano.I felt so sorry for the priest.
I think it is precious and dear, how your son is so truely interested in these things. It is amazing how God can plan the "right thing" for the pastor to speak of at just "the right time". I believe God talks to and deals with our children--they are innocent.
I just know God sees, speaks to and hears our children. They are very special gifts that we have been intrusted with.
How wonderful that he is able to be there during half of Mass now!
I don't know why, but this reminds me of this past Saturday night, during the homily, we were told that we needed to serve everyone and pray for everyone, even people we didn't like. My five year old turned to me and whispered, "Is that really true?"
That's so great! I'll bet you he will have a wonderful relationship with God as my son does.
That's awesome! And he sat through Mass? wow...
Will you be sending him to CCD (the training thing for communion)?
Thanks for your comments everyone!
Angie - how precious of your five year old, and terrific that he was listening!
ChrisD - Our parish has a wonderful Religious Education program, but we currently homeschool our children for religion as well. I did send my oldest son to CCD at church the year he made his First Communion. That same year Samuel attended CCD and I went with him. He was not as much of a behavioral disturbance as he would be now. I could probably arrange for a helper to attend a class at church with him, but for scheduling ease with our family and because Samuel just isn't at the same level as his peers, it is better to teach him at home right now.
so sweet when they start asking those questions.
What makes a homily differnt than a sermon?
"A homily explains a passage of scripture and gives practical applications." " A sermon develops a point of doctrine or morals in a systematic way."
My source (after looking around a little - this had the most concise explanation) http://pestle.blogspot.com/2006/09/homily-vs-sermon.html
Sounds like I'm not correct in saying the a homily is a Catholic version of anything, it's just what is used in the Catholic Mass.
