Here are some samples of homework that I have come up with for Samuel. I've talked about this in various postings over the past month. I have found that worksheets that come home for him aren't formatted for him to work with easily. He works much better with bigger type. Though I do get a listing of the things they cover each quarter for his classes, Samuel only gets homework sent home for spelling and a reading program he participates in. I try to make up homework for Math, Science, Reading class, and Social Studies. I do this both to reinforce what he is learning at school, and for me to get an idea of his abilities. I think it is good for Samuel to be able to work in a variety of environments and with various people. I strongly believe that he should be able to do school work with his parents! I send in the homework to his teachers even though they don't expect it. We have been discussing how to make his work at school more meaningful so this is my contribution. Samuel's teacher is also trying different things.

This is a worksheet I made up for Science. Handwriting isn't one of Samuel's favorite things, so I only give him small amounts to do at a time.

This is a worksheet I made up for Samuel for Social Studies. I use "Writing With Symbols." Samuel doesn't need to see a picture with each word, so it takes a little bit of work to remove/add/adjust the symbols that come up. I probably don't work with it as efficiently as it is possible to either. Anyways, the work it takes is worth the effort! Sorry if this is hard to read. I sometimes pencil in notes describing Samuel's ability and/or cooperation during the assignment.

This is a worksheet that I made up for Samuel's science class. When there are numerous answers to be given, I usually do the writing for Samuel. Anything to get through the work for right now!

I have a bunch of questions for you about homeschooling.
What curriculum do you use?
Does he get services, like speech, outside the home or do they come to the house?
How old is he?
What made you decide to homeschool?
I looked into homeschooling and almost did it, but decided on public school. However, middle school and high school are coming up.
Just curious.
I don't homeschool Samuel, though I might as well for all the work I have been doing with him at home lately! I really wish that I could homeschool him. I think about it all the time. After heavily considering it recently I have come to realize that I just could not do it and give the proper attention to my other children. For now Samuel will stay in public school. I am looking at Samuel's education as a "partnership" between his teachers at school and me. His special education teacher is very willing to meet with me and get my input, something I appreciate greatly.
I'll be glad to tell you more about the homeschool curriculum I use for my neurotypical son, but I want to clarify first that I don't homeschool Samuel.
I recently spoke with a Mom who did take her autistic son out of the local public schools about 5 years ago to homeschool him. She uses Seton Home Study School curriculum for him. This is a Catholic curriculum but this family was not Catholic and that wasn't a problem. Seton has a "Special Services" department that will create a curriculum for a student with special needs. They have a website with lots of info.
Samuel is 8 years old and is in second grade. The road to being able to do homework with him has been a long one that has been travelled in very small steps. It's worth it though and, who knows, it may be leading to the day when I do homeschool him. We'll see.
If you have other questions about homeschooling let me know and I'll speak to it in a separate posting.
